This week was spent practicing and preparing for a hand hygiene lesson. The senior class drove to St. James' Episcopal School to talk about hand hygiene. Before the actual trip we were tasked with organizing individual zip-lock bags with the necessary supplies for each child to create and name their own germ. We were able to speak with three different age groups, three to five year olds, about the importance of proper hand hygiene and the appropriate way to sneeze. The first thing we did was demonstrate how to sneeze properly, in your elbow, rather than sneezing on a friend. I was demonstrated this by using s spray bottle to replicate the sneeze and sprayed my classmate to show how sneezing is projected. The kids were able to partake in the activity by sitting on the floor, with a biomed student holding the spray bottle, and a long piece of blue paper. We told the kids to give their biggest "achoo" and we would spray the water and try and see who's "sneeze" went the farthest. Along with proper hygiene, we had glitter lotion that we put on the kids' hands to show them how easily germs transfer and then showed them the correct way to wash their hands in order to remove the glitter germs. The next activity we did with the kids included making and naming their very own germs. Each child was given a plastic bag with a popsicle stick, googly eye, ribbon, yarn, and a paper germ. They had so much fun creating their very own germ, decorating it, and naming it.
