On Friday, May 9th, I shadowed two residents during their evening trauma and surgical rounds from 6:00 PM to 11:00 PM. The first part of the shift was relatively calm, allowing me to observe how the residents stayed prepared for any trauma cases that might come through. Despite the quiet start, the team remained focused, monitoring patients and staying ready to respond at a moment’s notice. As the evening progressed, we began post-op and trauma rounds. We checked on a patient recovering from abdominal surgery who was experiencing low blood pressure, likely due to blood loss. Another patient, an elderly woman with a history of heart disease, had fallen and sustained a head injury. She had stitches on her forehead, seemed more confused than usual, and was scheduled for a CT scan later on in the night. We also saw a young woman with massive abdominal trauma, severe bruising, and multiple rib fractures. One of the most notable cases involved a car accident victim who appeared disoriented but had no visible lacerations. The patient had a dislocated wrist and was being evaluated for possible internal injuries. Overall, the night offered a combination of what trauma has to offer, business and chaos.
