Mentor Interview

I chose to interview Dr. Butts regarding the possibility of him agreeing to become my mentor this year. Dr. Butts is an assistant professor in the Department of Surgery and serves as a trauma and burn surgeon within the Division of Trauma & Acute Care Surgery at USA Health University. Being my mentor means allowing me to shadow both him and three other doctors in other fields of interest. The interview started with basic introductions before we moved into discussing the terms of the mentor agreement sheet given to us at the beginning of the year. The interview itself was through a video call and lasted around twenty minutes, the first thing Dr. Butts and I spoke about was my interest in general surgery and the possible training and information I would need before officially starting my internship with him. Dr. Butts then went on to explain the issues with interning in trauma surgery, most trauma cases happen at night or over the weekend, meaning that I would have to give up a night's sleep or a part of my weekend to see live trauma cases. We spent the rest of the interview speaking about the technicalities of the mentor agreement and answering any questions either of us had. When the interview came to an end Dr. Butts agreed to mentor me this year and help me shadow any other doctors in other fields to help me determine what field of medicine would be the best fit for me.
