Life South Field Trip
The biomedical classes went on a field trip to the Life South facility in Mobile, Alabama. While we were there the woman in charge gave us a tour of the facility while she told us about what happens to the blood after it is donated. We went from room to room while she explained what happens in each room and why it happens. We started out in the main room where all the blood is actually donated, and while we were in there she explained the process nurses need to follow while taking blood. From there we went to a separate room where she explained that it was where they went to confirm your blood type and make sure the donor filled all the questions out correctly before they are allowed to donate blood. Then we went into a back room where the blood is to be taken after the donation process is complete. While there the blood would be processed, separated, labeled, and placed into their proper container where they would stay until shipment. After that we were taken into yet another room where she explained that this is were all the blood is prepared for shipment to its hospital per hospital's request.
